AIFS is founded in Cincinnati, Ohio
The American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) is founded by Sir Cyril Taylor, Roger Walther and Doug Burck. They were inspired by Cyril’s soon-to-be wife Judy, a high school French teacher who wanted to take her class to France for the summer but was unable to do so as no US organisation offered this kind of service.
1965
The first AIFS students travel overseas
After leasing campuses at nine European universities that were closing during the summer months, AIFS sends the first group of students (a total of 1,500 participants) on high school study abroad programs.
1967
Creation of the AIFS Foundation
The AIFS Foundation, an independent 501(c)(3) public charity, is created with the assistance of Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

1970
Growth continues around the world
AIFS continues to expand and experience substantial growth, with new international offices and programs including the College Study Abroad programs with offerings in Europe, Asia and South America.
1972
Australia welcomes AIFS
While AIFS purchases Richmond College to support study abroad programs in the United Kingdom, it also expands Camp America to Australia. Now Australian applicants can experience work at a summer camp in the USA, facilitated by an agent here in Australia.
1981
Establishment of the AYA
The Academic Year in America is established to offer further improved opportunities for travel and education, now allowing students from all over the world to attend a high school for the year and stay with local host families across the USA.
1986
Au Pair in America welcomes new participants
AIFS launches a new concept called “Au Pair in America” – it aims to provide cultural exchange and live-in childcare for American families while young people from all over the world can experience authentic family life in the USA.
1999
The first Australian AIFS office opens
AIFS opens its office in Australia in Melbourne, further expanding its reach and the opportunities available to young Australians. 1999 is also the 30th Anniversary celebration of our hugely successful Camp America offering.
2005
Sydney becomes AIFS’ hub for the Asia Pacific
AIFS acquires the inbound operations of CIEE and opens a dedicated inbound student centre in Sydney’s CBD. Becoming the hub for AIFS’ operations in the Asia Pacific, we can expand our outbound programs as well as offer inbound programs to Australia.
Our Company profits help. Although AIFS is a for-profit company, it is owned by the Cyril Taylor Charitable Foundation (CTCF), established by our founder, Sir Cyril Taylor. Our profits therefore go exclusively to charitable causes.
